Frequent questions

Do I need an apostille for documents issued in my country?

Quick Answer:

It depends on where your documents were issued. If you're from a Hague Convention country (which includes most Western countries), you need an apostille. If not, your documents need consular legalisation. Either way, they'll also need certified translation by a sworn court translator in Montenegro.

In most cases, yes: you should plan to obtain an apostille (or consular legalisation) for key public documents issued in your home country that will be used in Montenegro. Montenegro is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. For documents coming from other Convention states (such as criminal-record certificates, birth or marriage certificates and some company documents), an apostille is usually required so that Montenegrin authorities can accept them without further authentication. If your country is not part of the Convention, full consular legalisation is normally required instead. Exactly which documents need an apostille depends on the procedure (residency, company formation, marriage, etc.), so it is important to check in advance with your lawyer or consultant which documents to prepare before you travel.
